In the UK, the main piece of legislation detailing employers’ duties concerning health and safety in the workplace is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Also known as the HASAWA or HSW, this legislation enshrines the duty of employers to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of all of their employees at work. The legislation’s coverage even extends to people visiting the workplace, including clients and members of the general public.

For the employer duties mentioned in the legislation, the HSW requires the employer to carry out each duty “so far as is reasonably practicable”.

These regulations replaced the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 and can be referred to as CDM 2015 or simply CDM. They require contractors in the construction sector to take various health and safety matters into account right through the course of a construction project.

The regulations touch on issues including interpretation, application and enforcement. They also specify management duties applicable to principals on the construction project, including the principal contractor.
