Built-up bituminous membrane, often referred to as ‘felt’, is a type of roofing covering – and, for domestic flat roofs, perhaps the most common and economical. Built-up bituminous membranes can be applied to timber, metal and concrete decks.

High-performance felts are available in rolls that we can apply in two layers, with hot bitumen bonding them together. The multiple layers can help to prevent the membrane failing – as, if one layer picks up damage, the next layer will typically cover it.

With the ‘pour and roll’ method, we will pour hot bitumen in front of the felt roll before unrolling the latter into the bitumen, resulting in the whole width of the roll becoming continuously coated.

An alternative method of applying felt is the ‘torch-on’ method. A torch-on bituminous felt comes pre-coated with bitumen, with the top layer typically polyester-based, while the underlay can be either polyester-reinforced or glass fibre-based.

To apply this membrane, we use a gas torch to heat the membrane’s underside, thereby melting the bitumen. Then, we roll out the membrane onto the substrate and leave it there to form a bond. We can decide the most suitable method of applying the membrane on a job-by-job basis.

Mastic asphalt – which combines asphalt, bitumen and aggregates – can provide a seamless covering when used in a roof, whether timber, metal or concrete decks are used.
